Description
REBECCA BEARDMORE
ON REFLECTION
1 - 22 December 2010
Artereal Gallery
747 Darling Street
Rozelle NSW 2039
Sydney based artist Rebecca Beardmore’s latest body of work On Reflection explores the fragile relationship between seeing, perception and understanding.
Beardmore’s painterly photographic images of figures in transit within the built environment are shot as reflections in the metal surfaces of the city, then printed onto industrial grade metal sheets, before being superimposed with subtle text fields with an objective description of the scene. The viewer’s reflection becomes apparent as the figures dissolve and the text becomes legible. Other works are printed onto rag paper where the text is embossed. The relationships between seeing and reading are explored in these subtle yet poignant pieces.
Rebecca Beardmore is lecturer in Printmedia at Sydney College of the Arts, Sydney University. Her unique and innovative approach landed Rebecca the prestigious 2010 Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award, a $12,000 Acquisitive Prize for the City of Fremantle Art Collection.
