‘Points of Departure’: Building Advocacy for Immigrant and Refugee Women
Multicultural Centre for Women’s Health Seminar Series 2010
Date: Thursday 25 February 2010 Time: 9.00am - 2.00pm

What will participants learn by attending this Seminar?
The first MCWH Seminar for 2010 will focus on the settlement and health-related challenges faced by immigrant and refugee women from both established and newly arrived communities. How our knowledge of these issues influences advocacy will also be explored. The seminar will also underscore that for effective advocacy to be achieved, the voices of immigrant and refugee women must be heard.

Who will benefit from participating in this Seminar?
Health and allied professionals, welfare and community development workers, social workers, teachers, students and those with an interest in the health and wellbeing of immigrant and refugee women.

Guest Speakers:
Hatice (‘Hutch’) Hussein is the Manager of the Advocacy, Innovation & Marketing (AIM) Unit at Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre. Hutch will discuss the settlement and health-related challenges faced by immigrant and refugee women in Australia. Her presentation will draw on Spectrum MRC’s thirty-year’s experience in this area. This will include reflecting on projects which Spectrum MRC has undertaken to empower women to overcome their challenges and develop opportunities for self-advocacy. How NGOs can advocate with and for these women will also feature in her presentation.

Dr Pauline Gwatirisa is a Health Promotion and Research Project Officer at MCWH. Pauline’s presentation will focus on the settlement and health-related challenges faced by immigrant and refugee women, and how our knowledge of these issues influences our advocacy work. She will draw on her experience working on the MCWH ‘Points of Departure’ advocacy project.
