Human Rights Commission calls for comment on UN submission

Written by Administrator Wednesday, 02 June 2010 14:26

The Australian Human Rights Commission has issued its draft Universal Period Review (UPR) submission for comments.  The UPR is run by the Human Rights Council (a United Nations agency), it is intended as a form of quality assurance and compliance under which all member countries have to report on their commitment to human rights - it is a rolling process (although a new one) and will come around every few years. Effectively, it tries to put a spotlight on countries' human rights performances. For more information see: http://www.upr-info.org/ or http://www.ohchr.org/en/hrbodies/upr/pages/uprmain.aspx (although there are plenty more UN sites that will give you more details).

In a response to the Report the CulturalDiversity News administrator suggests there's still a long way to go. Comments on the Report can be made up to December 16. Meanwhile, the prizes are out for the best mashups using government data, with the winner being Suburban Trends (again no cultural diversity but at least some socio-economic differences).
