Bridging the divide through digital technologies

MyLanguage conference will explore how digital technologies can assist CALD communities to achieve social inclusion and maintain linguistic and cultural identity. The New South Wales State Library is hosting the three day My Language conference from August 9-August 11 in Sydney.
The MyLanguage group has been set up to discuss the needs for
information and content creation by culturally and linguistically
diverse communities, focusing on digital inclusion initiatives and
strategies involving humanitarian entrants and refugees.
It is
also a forum for discussing the future directions of the MyLanguage
project with respect to its vision of using information technologies to
enable libraries to empower CALD communities to: achieve greater social
inclusion, and maintain and enrich cultural and linguistic diversity.

Immigration in free fall, says The Age

In a bizarre twist to the immigration debate, The Age's economics editor Tim Colebatch has claimed that new immigration figures suggest a crisis in immigration - perhaps not enough people - has emerged following Rudd government reforms. Indian immigration has fallen =dramatically, directly as a result of tightening up of the international student situation, and perhaps helped along by a perception in india that Australia is a dangerous place. Quarter on quarter figures suggest a halving of the nett migration numbers.
Imam argues woman shouldn't wear burka in court case

ABC News has quoted Perth imam Sheik Feizel Chothia arguing that a request by defence lawyers for a woman to give court evidence in burka breaches rather than reflects Islamic practice. The case involves alleged fraud by the owner of an islamic school. The ABC story, which focuses on the alleged difference of opinion on the burka between the cosmopolitan and well-travelled NP leader Warren Truss, and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, follows.
